The Barton swing bridge and swing aqueduct are one of the wonders of the industrial revolution. They were constructed between 1890 and 1894 and are both operated from the control tower you see in the center of the picture. The swing aqueduct is a remarkable structure which carries the Bridgewater canal over the Manchester Ship canal. Both the swing bridge and swing aqueduct open to allow ships to pass along the ship canal.
