Mam Tor
The history of the hillfort at Mam Tor goes all the way back 3500 years to the Bronze Age with continued occupation in both the Iron Age and Roman periods. The site is the largest Hillfort in Derbyshire and both one of the highest and one of the oldest hillforts in England. The site has very well preserved ramparts and many levelled areas which you can see on some of the pictures, each of which had been a house or work building. The site is well worth a visit on the ground, with history information boards and the summit offering excellent views of Edale and the Hope Valley towards Castleton and Pevril castle . If visiting the site on the ground be carefully with children of the dangerous cliff edge which has been prone to collapse for hundreds of years and is the reason why the road below is closed. The summit contains 2 Bronze age burial mounds under the area now paved near the Trig point.
