Hay Castle has a long history, most of it involving burning. Built in the late 12th Century, probably 1170, it saw extensive conflict throughout the medieval period. The town was burnt by Llywelyn Fawr in 1231 and extensively fought over during the Barons War, 1263 to 1266. The castle was damaged again by Owain Glyndŵr in 1401. Military use finally ended in 1660 when James Boyle of Hereford demolished part of the curtain wall and built the Jacobean mansion house on the site. This mansion was badly damaged by fires in 1939 and 1977.
