Built around the 12th century the castle has been in ruins since Tudor times although as you can see from the aerial photograph it is well preserved with the line of the curtain wall showing very clearly and almost unbroken. In the extract below I have zoomed in on the round tower from the northern wall which still stands to a significant height. The castle is believed by many to be the birthplace of Katherine Parr, last wife of Henry V111, although there is an element of doubt over this. Like most castles it was rebuilt and altered numerous times during its life and was used as a source of stone by the townspeople after it fell into disuse. The gatehouse appears to have collapsed into the moat, bringing to mind the mental vision of some 17th century peasant removing stone from the bottom and being somewhat surprised when the whole lot falls down on his head!
