The earliest parts of the castle go back to the period immediately after the Norman Conquest in 1066 when it was built by Roger de Montgomery . Much of what remains today was was rebuilt in the 18th century by Sir Thomas Telford. The castle saw action in 1138 when it was besieged and captured by King Stephen . In 1403 the great battle famous from Shakespears play Henry IV part 1, took place just 3 miles north of the castle when Henry IV defeated Hotspur whose body was later put on display in Shrewsbury. In the English civil war the town started in Royalist control but was quickly taken by the roundheads who held the castle and town for the rest of the war.
