Built on the site of the Roman military headquarters the first minister was built in 7th Century. The minster was rebuilt many times over the centuries and today remains can be seen in the foundations dating from the year 1080. The current minster was started around the year 1220 with building work going on for 250 years until 1472 during which time it was hampered by the Black Death of 1349. Cromwell had a victory serice here in 1644 following the battle of Marston Moor. For more history of the Minster click here. Most of the Robin Hood tower which can clearly be seen in the foreground, is a Victorian reconstruction... stone on the outside but concrete on the inside, although that is perhapsapropriate as concrete was a Roman invention!
