Founded by William II Rufus (the Red ) (1087-1100 AD)
the Benedictine Abbey was started in 1088 although most of the remains that can be seen today date from the 13th century. Following the reformation and the dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII th the Abbey now stands in ruins.
