Built in 1705 this prison is famous as the prison where Dick Turpin spent his final days before execution. The central building is the Debtors Prison, in the foreground is the courthouse (1737) and the third building above is the female prison (1783). Hangings took place here right up until 1898. The courthouse is still in use today as York Crown Court , whereas the other buildings are now York Castle Museum which contains full sized recreations of Victorian streets.
