Clifford's Tower is the last remaining part of York Castle. It was built by the Normans under William the Conqueror who first constructed a wooden keep, followed in 1270 by the stone tower we see today. Originally there was another tower at Baille Hill on the other side of the River Ouse but this has been lost. The tower has a dark history as it was here that the cities Jewish population were massacred in a riot in 1190. The tower gets its name from Roger De Clifford who was executed here in 1322 and hanged from the walls. For more online information click here.
