aerial photograph of the Canary Wharf & London Docklands, Isle of Dogs, England UK. London Docklands were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries starting with the West India Dock in 1802. By the end of the 20th century containerisation of the shipping industry and larger ships meant that the docks were no longer needed and had become run down. It was decided by the government to remodel the area as a new commercial and residential centre to be known as London Docklands. Central to the scheme was the Canary Wharf project which consists of numerous skyscraper tower blocks and is a major financial centre. What was once one of the busiest ports in the world became one of the busiest financial centres.
