aerial photograph of Hurstwood Reservoir Lancashire with Cant Clough Reservoir, Gorple Upper Reservoir and Gorple Lower Reservoir in the background. Meandering up the right hand side of the image is the Pennine Bridleway. Hurstwood Reservoir was built in 1925 and partially covers the ancient quarry, remains of which show clearly in the image. The area is rumored to be the site of battle of Brunanburh which took place in AD 937 when Æthelstan King of England was challenged by a combined force from Constantine, King of Scotland, Owen King of Strathclyde and Olaf King of Dublin.Æthelstan triumphed and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states "never yet as many people killed before this with sword's edge ... since from the east Angles and Saxons came up over the broad sea".
