aerial photograph of Roman fort ,Mamucium, Castlefield Manchester UK. Manchester's Roman Fort was founded in AD 79 and known to the Roimans as Mamucium. The fort was accompanied by a substantial settlement or Vicus, however little remains of the Vicus as most of the area has been heavily built on since the 19th century. The Romans chose the site to cover the crossing of the River Medlock and it lay on the roads between Chester ( Deva Victrix) and York (Eboracum). The fort was abandoned when the Romans left Britain around AD410.
