aerial photograph of Tamworth Castle Staffordshire England UK. Grade I listed Tamworth Castle was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is one of the best preserved Motte & Bailey Castles in England. The foundations of the castle go back much further. During the Saxon period Offa , King of Mercia, had a palace here which, along with the town, was destroyed by the Vikings in AD 874. The Castle was rebuilt in AD 913 only to be destroyed again in 943. The ruins were refortified with a timber castle shortly after the Norman Conquest. The timber structure was replaced with the castle we see today. The Castle was captured by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil war and as they subsequently garrisoned it, the castle was not slighted.
