aerial photograph of site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 in East Sussex England UK. The Anglo Saxons stood lined along the ridge line with the Normans attacking uphill from the right in the photograph. Battle Abbey at the top of the photograph was built on the orders of William The Conquer shortly after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Legend had it that the Abbey was built on the site of the battle and the Altar was built on the spot where King Harold fell. The lie of the land as in this photograph indicates the legend is plausible.
