aerial photograph of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre showing West Wall of the old city walls. The walls kept the city safe from successive Scottish attacks during the middle ages until the walls were finally breached during the English Civil war. The walls were last reinforced during the Jacobite rebellions of the mid 18th century but by the end of that century they were no longer needed and the first sections were demolished.
