This was the site of the Soho Foundry which was opened in 1795 by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. The Foundry was a key element in the beginning of the industrial revolution and was used to manufacture steam engines including those that powered the SS Great Eastern. The Foundry was a pioneer in mass production techniques. The foundry was bought by W & T Avery Ltd in 1895 and is today still used for the production of weighing machines under the name of Avery Weigh-Tronix.
