aerial photograph of Caernarfon Castle Caernarfon Gwynedd Wales UK. Built by Edward I at the end of the 13th century as part of his Iron Ring of castles around North Wales. Caernarfon Castle was the administrative headquarters and built on a grand scale with a planned walled town built around it.The town and castle were captured by Madog ap Llywelyn in the rebellion of 1294 and then retaken by the english in 1295. During Glyndwr rebellion of 1400–1415, the castle was besieged but held firm. During the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by the Parliamentarians before finally surrendering in 1646. Parliament ordered the castle to be slighted after the war but this work was never carried out leaving us with the magnificent monument we have today.
