aerial photograph of the Ffestiniog Railway ( Rheilffordd Ffestiniog) Wales. Opened in 1836 the Ffestiniog Railway was originally intended to carry slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog where they were exported all around the world. After the slate mining industry went into decline, tourism took off and now the Ffestiniog Railwayis one of the UK's top tourist attractions. The Festiniog Railway Company is the oldest surviving railway company in the world and recently expanded by opening the Welsh Highland Railway which joins the FFestiniog line at Porthmadog and then travless all the way to Caernarfon.
