aerial photograph of Chirk Aqueduct and adjacent Chirk Railway Viaduct in Wales. The 220m long aqueduct is part of the Ellesmere Canal and designed by Thomas Telford. It was constructed 1796 to 1801 and is now Grade II listed and part of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct World Heritage Site.
The Chirk Railway Viaduct was built along side the Aquaduct and was deliberately built higher to show the superiority of railways over canals.The Railway Viaduct was built 1846-1848 to carry the Shrewsbury to Chester line over the Ceiriog Valley. Designed by Henry Robinson it is 260m long and 30 m high with 16 arches.
