aerial photograph of the site of Tadcaster Castle Yorkshire England UK.Its likley that the first fortification o this site was a Roman Fort which gave Tadcaster its name. Certainly there was something here in 1066 as this is the place that King Harold assembled his army in preparation for the Battle of Stamford Bridge. A Motte and Bailey castle was built here in the 11th century. This fell into ruin but was fortified during the English Civil war. During the war the forces of Sir Thomas Fairfax clashed with Sir Thomas Glemhams Royalist forces around the bridge in the Battle of Tadcaster.
