aerial photograph of St Edmundsbury Cathedral Bury St Edmunds Suffolk England UK. St Edmundsbury Cathedral can trace its history back to 1065 when when St Denis's Church was built. At the time the site was part of of Bury St Edmunds Abbey.The original Norman church was rebuilt, in 1503,to a design by John Wastell. The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 but the church survived, as did the adjacent Norman Gatehouse. Further rebuilding work was done in the 19th Century by by George Gilbert Scott. Today the Church is protected by Grade I listing.
