aerial photograph of Longtown Castle Keep Herefordshire England UK. Constructed around 1175 as a Norman Timber Motte & Bailey Castle, there is some evidence it was built on the site of a Roman structure which preceded it. It was rebuilt in stone in the 13th Century. The population of Longtown was severely diminished with the Black Death of the 14th century and the castle also declined in importance. The castle was slighted during the English Civil war resulted in the ruin we see today.
