The exact date of this enclosure is unknown but it is likely to be one of the so called 'tor enclosures'. These date from around 6000 years ago in the early Neolithic period when humans activity first began to leave a mark on the landscape. The cliffs are on the South West Coast Path and are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The cliffs are composed of sandstone called Hangman Grits laid down during the Devonian Period between 60 million years and 419.2 million years ago.
