aerial photograph of Restormel Castle Cornwall England UK. Originally constructed around 1100 AD as a Motte & Bailey Castle, it was rebuilt in stone 1192–1225. It was used as a high status home to the Earls of Cornwall during the medieval period, however by the time of the English Civil War it was in a dilapidated state. It was hastily fortified and garrisoned by Parliamentarian forces, however on 21 August 1644 it was taken by force in an attack by Royalists forces. By the end of the civil war the castle was in a state of total ruin.
