aerial photograph of Horwich , Lancashire, stil dominated by the former Horwich Works. Opened in 1886 Horwich Works was a railway works operated by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ( LYR ). In 1923 the LYR became part of the LMS - London, Midland and Scottish Railway. During the second world war the works built Cruiser, Centaur and Matilda tanks. The works operated until 1983 with the rail connection being removed in 1989. Today the site is used by various businesses and is called the Horwich Loco Industrial Estate.
