aerial photograph of Swansea Castle Wales ( Castell Abertawe ), Originally built in 1107 as a Norman Timber castle, it was damaged by Welsh forces during an attack in 1116. The castle survived a sige in 1192 by Rhys ap Gruffydd, Prince of Deheubarth but eventually fell to Llewelyn Fawr in 1217. He gave the castle back to the English in 1220 as part of a peace deal with Henry III, following which, at the end of the 13th century, the castle was rebuilt in stone. By the end of the medieval period castle had fallen into ruin. Significant parts were demolished between 1909 and 1913. The building was not fully protected until it was listed in 1952.
