aerial photograph of Stockport Viaduct, built in 1840 for the the Manchester and Birmingham Railway it was designed by George Watson Buck it is one of the largest Brick structures in the UK. It took 21 months and 600 workers to build it. In 1948 there was a fatal accident on the viaduct when one train ran into the back of another. During the war my Grandfather was stuck up here during an air raid. It sound counter intuitive but by stopping on the viaduct the train would be safe from all but a direct hit.
