It was built built by Sir Rice Mansel and following his death in 1559, his son, Sir Edward Mansel between 1520 and 1580. By the mid 17th century the family had moved out and leased the castle to tenants. The building became dilapidated by the 18th century but it continued to be used as a farmhouse right up until the 20th century. The castle is now cared for by CADW and open to the public.
