aerial photograph of Stockland Little Castle , Devon England UK. Stockland Little Castle is a small 126m x 104m embanked enclosures, with an external ditch known as a round. The construction dates from the late iron age or early Roman period and would have enclosed a number of dwellings. Lightly defended agricultural settlements of this type were largely replaced by undefended communities by the 7th century AD. There are more than 750 rounds in Great Britain and Stockland Little Castle is a fairly typical example. The ramparts are around 8m wide and the remains still stand up to 2m high. The site is associated with the nearby contemporaneous Stockland Great Castle.
