aerial photograph of Broadbury Castle Roman camp Beaworthy Devon. Broadbury Castle is a Roman Marching Camp. Such camps were used when on campaign and were built for each stop. They were only used for a very short period of time, sometimes just a day. This Camp follows the usual rectangular form with rounded corners and is 69m x 61m. It is constructed at the top of a hill which is today used for a communications antenna. While photographing this camp I was surprised to see a second rectangle parch mark just a few feet away to the north. I have found no information on this second structure but it is not uncommon to find multiple marching camps built adjacent each other or even overlapping.
