This is the site of Liverpool Crown Street Station, the worlds first intercity passenger railway station. It was opened with the Liverpool to Manchester Railway in 1830 but was soon replaced for passengers by Lime St station. It was used for freight right up until 1972 but has unfortunately since been demolished. Originally this was the terminus for passengers, but for freight the line went through a tunnel all the way to Wapping Dock. The Wapping Tunnel still exists but is no longer used.
