aerial photograph of Mount Batten, Plymouth England UK. Mount Batten is a rocky outcrop overlooking the mouth of the River Plym. It is named after the local P in the 17th century, Sir William Batten. The site has been occupied since prehistoric times with extensive evidence of international trading through the bronze age and iron age. During the English Civil War Parliamentarian forces constructed an earthwork fort on the site. After the war, in 1652 an artillery fort, Mount Batten Tower was built on the peninsular to defend Plymouth and Sutton Harbour. Today it is a scheduled ancient monument. During the First World War, sea planes were flown from around the Peninsular with the base being known as RNAS Cattewater
