aerial photograph of Burrow Mump Burrowbridge Somerset England UK. Burrow Mump is a motte castle on top of a natural hill with the remains of an 18th century church on the summit. The site is an ideal defensive location overlooking the confluence of the River Tone and the River Parrett. The natural hill has been reshaped to form the motte with a flat base and berm at its foot. Showing clearly in the photo is the course of an access trackway which leads up the hill. It stops short of the berm and the final access to the castle would have been on foot. The site is covered with strip lynchets which probably resulted from medieval farming after the site ceased to play a military role. The church on the summit was constructed in the 18th century but never finished. It replaced an earlier structure of uncertain date which was recorded as having stood here in 1645 when Royalist Troops occupied the site and held out against Parliamanterian forces for three days.
The easiest way to navigate this gallery is using the geographic menu on the left. The aerial photographs are all organised in galleries according to their location so start with the county and then choose the town or village. Wales & Scotland are at the bottom under the English Counties. If your looking at a picture and are not sure where it is, click the arrow on the upper right and it will show you which album it is in. Click the album name to see nearby images. There is a search facility ( bottom left ) but this only works with words I have put into it. That's fine for searches of places or well known buildings but in most cases I have not entered road name or a post code. The gallery is only a small part of my collection of UK aerial photographs so please Email if you would like to buy an aerial view of something not in the gallery. There are over 25,000 photos in the gallery and I have an archive of around half a million pictures going back to 1999.
