aerial photograph of Gloucester Cathedral Gloucestershire England UK. Founded as an Abbey in the Dark Ages, the first elements of the surviving structure were laid down as the Abbey Church at the end of the 11th century. Much of the original Norman structures survives including the Norman Nave, with some later additions such as the south porch. The cathedral has a stained-glass window , dated 1350, depicting golf, one of the oldest images of the game. Henry III was coronated here in 1216 an unusual exception to use usual coronations at Westminster Abbey. The cathedral was extensively restored between 1873 and 1897 by George Gilbert Scott.
