aerial photograph of Ashton Old Rd Openshaw Manchester UK showing the industrial area around Bessemer Street, Welcomb St and Whitworth St. M11 2NE. Today the site consists of light industrial units but in the past great things were achieved here as it was the site of Armstrong Whitworth Engineering works and along to the left of the photo was the Crossley Engine Works. Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd manufactured armour and guns here , helping to build some of Britain's great Battleships . Demand dried up with disarmament in the 1920's and the engineering works closed and was demolished in the 1930s. The lower part of the image used to be Ashbury's Sidings and Openshaw Goods Shed. Today it is Tarmac Ashbury.
