aerial photograph of the Chatham Historic Dockyard Chatham Kent UK. Royal Dockyards at Chatham served the Royal Navy from the 17th century through to final closure in 1984. The ships of Sir Francis Drake and Lord Nelson were built and maintained here. Today much of the site is preserved as the Chatham Historic Dockyard Museum and open to the public. At the heart of the site are the covered building slipways which were built in 1847-8.In the foreground , the covered slip with the curved end is NO. 3 covered slip built in 1838. The building was originally one of three and was designed by Sir Robert Seppings
