Farringdon station was opened in 1863 as terminus of the world's first passenger carrying underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway. The line was powered by steam engines when opened but electrified in 1905 to 1907. Today Farringdon station serves the London Underground and is an interchange station between Thameslink and the Crossrail for which a new Thameslink ticket hall has been built. The original 1922 station designed by architect Charles Walter Clark remains in use.
