aerial photograph of Dudley Castle Dudley, West Midlands ,England UK. Grade I listed Dudley Castle was constructed in the 12th century to replace a previous Norman wooden Motte & Bailey Castle built shortly after the Norman Conquest. The castle held out against a siege by King Stephen in 1138 but Henry II had the castle demolished. The castle was rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries but slighted at the end of the English Civil war after the castle had held firm against Parliamentarian forces for 2 years from 1644 to 1646. Thereafter the castle served no military function but continued to be used as a residence until a fire destroyed the residential buildings in 1750.
