The woodland escarpment Kinver Edge has been inhabited since the bronze age and one of the Rock Houses,"Holy Austin", served as a Hermitage until the English Reformation under Henry VIII.The Rock houses were inhabited by up to 11 families until the 1960's after which they were deemed unsuitable for habitation, but have since been preserved by the National Trust. These were England's last last troglodyte dwellings and provided J. R. R. Tolkien with inspiration to create The Hobbits.
