aerial photograph of the practice trenches dug in World War1 by the Sheffield Pals on Hallam Moor. The familiar zig zag pattern of these military trenches is still visible more than a hundred years after they were built. The zig zag is to stop shell splinters or bullets flying along the trench causeing mass casualties. My Grandad explained this to me back in the 1970s. He was in the Royal Engineers during World War One and did his training in North Wales in 1916. He was then part of Kitcheners Army on the Somme where he built trenches like this for real.
