aerial photograph of Horwich Locomotive Works, Horwich , Lancashire, taken in 2008 when much of the Loco Works were still extant. Opened in 1886 Horwich Locomotive Workss was a railway works operated by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ( LYR ). In 1923 the LYR became part of the LMS - London, Midland and Scottish Railway. During the second world war the works built Cruiser, Centaur and Matilda tanks. The works operated until 1983 with the rail connection being removed in 1989. At the time of this photo in 2008 the site was used by various businesses and was called the Horwich Loco Industrial Estate.The site will soon be redeveloped as the Rivington Chase housing project.
