aerial photograph of Clifford Castle, Clifford Herefordshire UK HR3. Clifford Castle was first constructed shortly after the Norman Conquest in AD1070. The castle was rebuilt in stone towards the end of the 11th century. In AD 1233 the castle was besieged by Henry III after its owner, Walter de Clifford rebelled. The siege only lasted a few days before De Clifford surrendered and pledged alliegence to the King. By the late medieval period the border between England and Wales was peacful and the castle fell into decline, although it was briefly refortified in 1402 during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr. The castle was abandoned after the rebellion.
