aerial photograph of the site of Burscough Roman fort, Burscough Lancashire UK. Burscough Roman fort is one of the most recent and remarkable discoveries. Although the location was called "Castle Field" on 19th century maps it was not until 2013 that the first excavations were carried out and revealed the fort which is now is thought to be a Roman auxiliary fort and dated to the first century AD during the reign of Claudius . Excavations suggest there was originally stone fort about 160m wide which was replaced by a smaller fort built on the same site at a later date. No evidence of habitation later than the 4th century has been found. The site is protected as a scheduled monument ( 1470328 ) .
