aerial photograph of Earthworks at Thopre Arnold near Melton Mowbray Leicestershire UK . The site includes a number of archaeological features including a medieval fishpond and extensive defensive works indicating occupation from prehistoric to medieval times. The remains of the fishpond in Hall Close field are clear to see in the image. This fishpond is built on top of a bronze age fort with a portion of the ramparts still extant immediately to the north f the fishpond. Ancient records show that one Ernald de Bois, steward to Robert 'Bossu' had a castle here. Castle in this case is likely to mean a defended manor house rather than a full military stone structure.
