Great Witcombe

aerial photographs of Great Witcombe Roman Villa Gloucestershire England UK. The Great Witcombe Romano-British Villa was built in the 250 AD and was occupied until the end of the Roman Occupation in the 5th Century. The Villa is unusual for the Roman period in that it is built into the hillside which has been terraced to accommodate it. There are between 400 and 1000 Romano-British Villas known and the majority were built by wealthy native Brits rather than Romans. This Villa was first discovered in 1818 and partially excavated shortly after. At that time the ruins were better preserved with walls still up to 2m high and extensive mosaics. Some of these features have been lost and to protect what remains, two small modern stone buildings have been erected over the Bath House.
