Five Barrows Hill
8 photos
aerial photographs of Bronze Age barrows on Five Barrows Hill, in the Exmoor National Park, Devon, England UK. There are actually rather more than five barrows on five barrow hill, probably around 8. The Hill likely gets its name from the fact that five of the barrows are visible from the roadway lower down the hill. Bowl Barrow burials typically date from the late Neolithic period to the Late Bronze Age, with the majority dated between 2400-1500BC. They are constructed as an earthen mound and may contain a single burial or several. There are more than 370 Barrows on Exmoor. Although the Barrows on 5 Barrow Hll have suffered some degrading over the years, considering they 4or 5000 years old, the archeology is remarkably well preserved.

Martinhoe
9 photos
aerial photographs of Martinhoe Roman Fortlet in Devon UK. Built to guard the north Devon coast, it would have had a timber fortlet with only the earthworks remaining today. Fortlets are relatively rare in Britain with only around 50 examples known, with 25 of those being in Scotland. It was constructed around the middle of the first century AD under the Emperor Claudius and was in use for a relatively short period of time. It was probably home to a Roman century, which despite the name consisted of around 65 to 80 auxiliary troops.
