Deptford railway station was opened in 1836 by the London and Greenwich Railway making it one of the oldest railway stations in London. The original 19th century buildings were replaced by Southern Railway before the war. The Southern railway buildings were then demolished and replaced with modern buildings in 2011. Ths photograph shows the old Southern Railway station buildings. Deptford station is built on the Grade II listed London Bridge – Greenwich Railway Viaduct which at 3 1/2 miles long is one of the wonders of the Victorian age and the longest run of arches in Britain. It was built 1834-36 for the London and Greenwich Railway which was the first elevated railway in the world.
