London's two financial centres in one aerial photograph. In the foreground left Canary Wharf , London Docklands, Isle of Dogs, and on the background right the City of London and the square mile. London Docklands were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries starting with the West India Dock in 1802. By the end of the 20th century containerisation of the shipping industry and larger ships meant that the docks were no longer needed and had become run down. It was decided by the government to remodel the area as a new commercial and residential centre to be known as London Docklands. Central to the scheme was the Canary Wharf project which consists of numerous skyscraper tower blocks and is a major financial centre. Canary Wharf was once part the busiest port in the world and has now become one of the world's busiest financial centres.
