aerial photograph showing the site of Stockport Castle in Stockport town centre. Stockport Castle was first mentioned in the historical record in AD 1173 when it was owned by Geoffrey de Costentyn who rebelled against Henry II during the barons' rebellion of AD 1173–1174. It was constructed adjacent the crossing over the River Mersey. It was recoreded as being ruinous in 1535 and the remaining parts were demolished in 1775. The market was held within the Castle's bailey and although all trace of the castle has gone, the market remains in its original location.
