aerial photograph of the Manchester Ship Canal at Warrington Cheshire UK.The Manchester Ship Canal is one of the greatest engineering feats of the Victorian age. It is 36 miles long and connects Manchester to the sea. Opened in 1894, construction took six years and cost £15 million. The ship canal allowed Manchester to become Britain's third biggest port and was busy until containerisation appeared in the 1970's, after which the canal was too small for modern container ships. More recently there are plans to rejuvenate the canal as part of the Atlantic Gateway project which will involve building Port Salford, a new container base along the canal near Trafford Park.
